Abstract Under the background of globalization, interpreting culture-loaded expressions will certainly be a big challenge for the interpreter. As one of the most important interpreting theories, the Interpretive Theory emphasizes the transferring of sense instead of transcoding between two languages. According to the theory, the interpreter has to combine linguistic knowledge with extra-linguistic knowledge to interpret accurately, which includes background knowledge, cultural knowledge, context, working experience and so on. In the perspective of the Interpretive Theory, there are three stages in the process of interpreting: comprehension, de-verbalization and expression, which is called the triangular model. De-verbalization is the core of the theory. 48650
This dissertation is composed of six parts. The first part illustrates the theme and the theoretical basis of this thesis; The second part reviews the results of previous research. The third part gives a brief introduction to the development of the theory and its essence-the triangular model; Practical examples are listed in the fourth part to analyze the interpretation of culture-loaded expressions based on the three steps of the theory. In the fifth part, an investigation is made on this campus to further prove the application of the theory on interpretation in a methodology of quantitative analysis; The last chapter is the tentative conclusion of the dissertation: the Interpretive Theory can be applied to interpreting and the interpreters have already used this theory as one of their interpreting method unconsciously. This conclusion is demonstrated in three aspects: 1. Semantic equivalence is important in interpreting and that includes the transferring of context as well as emotion; 2. De-verbalization is an indispensable stage. Unable to get rid of the linguistic form of source language has still been an obstacle to most of the interpreters; 3. Understanding culture-loaded expressions needs the background information, therefore, interpreters should acquire both linguistic knowledge and cultural knowledge.
Key Words: the Interpretive Theory, triangular model, culture-loaded expressions
